Ketamine, also known as 2-chlorophenyl-2-methylaminocyclohexanone, is a derivative of phenylcyclohexylpyridine (PCP). Because its physical shape is usually a white powder, and the first letter of its English name is K, it is commonly known as K powder. In medical clinical practice, it is generally used as an anesthetic and is classified as the first category of psychotropic drug control.

In 1962, American pharmacist Calvin Stevens successfully synthesized it for the first time and initially discovered it as an effective anesthetic. It was reportedly first used as a veterinary anesthetic and was widely used as an anesthetic in field trauma surgery during the Vietnam War.
In 1971, the cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles in the United States first reported cases of ketamine abuse, mainly in entertainment venues where overnight dancing occurred, and these venues were mainly visited by some subculture groups of teenagers.
In 1999, K powder was transferred to the mainland through Japan, Thailand, and Hong Kong.
On June 9, 2001, the National Medical Products Administration of China included ketamine in the management of Class II psychotropic drugs. In 2003, the Ministry of Public Security included it in the category of drugs.
In August 2004, ketamine (including its possible salts and preparations) was classified as a Class I psychotropic drug and can only be produced by designated pharmaceutical production enterprises designated by the National Food and Drug Administration. Starting from July 2004, ketamine preparations must be sold and purchased according to requirements.
