Typhoid fever caused by typhoid bacteria can occur in patients during the epidemic season and region, with persistent high fever (40-41 ℃) lasting for 1-2 weeks or more, and special toxic facial features such as relatively slow pulse, skin rose rash, liver and spleen enlargement, low total white blood cell count in peripheral blood, disappearance of eosinophils, and presence of typhoid cells (ring cells) in bone marrow, which can be clinically diagnosed as typhoid fever.

The incubation period is about 10 days, and its length is related to the amount of infected bacteria. Food based outbreaks can last as short as 48 hours, while water based outbreaks can last up to 30 days. The typical natural course of typhoid fever is about 4 weeks and can be divided into 4 stages:
1. In the initial stage
Equivalent to the first week of the disease, the onset is mostly slow, and fever is the earliest symptom, often accompanied by general discomfort, fatigue, decreased appetite, sore throat, and cough. The condition gradually worsens, and the body temperature rises in a stepped pattern, reaching 39-40 ℃ within 5-7 days. There may be chills and few shivers before fever, and sweating is not significant when fever subsides.
2. Polar period
Equivalent to the second to third week of the disease course, there are often typical manifestations of typhoid fever, which is helpful for diagnosis.
3. Relief period
Equivalent to the 3rd to 4th week of the disease, the body's resistance to typhoid bacteria gradually increases, body temperature fluctuates and begins to decrease, appetite gradually improves, abdominal distension gradually disappears, and spleen enlargement begins to shrink. But there is a risk of intestinal bleeding or perforation during this period, and special vigilance is needed.
4. Recovery period
Starting from the fourth weekend of the disease, the body temperature returns to normal and appetite improves. Generally, it takes about a month for complete recovery to be healthy.
